About Us

HISTORY OF THE CREDIT UNION

The Congress of the United States enacted what is now known as the Federal Credit Union Act on June 26th, 1934, and cited to the text was entitled

An act to establish a Federal Credit Union System to establish a further market for securities of the United States and to make more available to people of small means credit for provident purposes through a national system of cooperative credit, thereby helping to stabilize the credit structure of the United States.

By virtue of this Act, Mr. Thomas A. Mahoney and several other employees of the New York Central Railroad at Buffalo, NY, initiated an active interest and a physical effort to obtain a charter and establish the New York Central System Employees Buffalo Federal Credit Union.

Charter No., 845 was granted and operation of this Credit Union began on January 13th, 1936. The group of Organizers recognizing Mr. Mahoney’s leadership and enthusiasm chose him as the first president. Mr. Mahoney continued in this office for twenty (20) years until his promotion to an official position by the New York Central to East Rochester, NY.

The Credit Union maintained its office at Central Terminal Building, Buffalo, New York. Sixteen (16) subscribers subscribed to shares, from one share to twenty shares to start the Credit Union.
